Chef Johnny Series No. 2
18 x 17"
Watercolor on Saunders Waterford 200# Rough

It was the end of the day, but Chef Johnny didn't back out. My friend had arranged a photo shoot with, so he stayed a little later. He was tired and nervous and flattered that we wanted to paint him, couldn’t quite figure why we would. His kind, gruff demeanor took me back to my oil field days in Alaska. He laughed and chuckled a lot; it was an immediate connection as a painter. I knew I’d want to do at least three paintings, had to work to catch him while he wasn’t smiling. It was also clear that one painting--this one--would be done with traditional realism.

He has been and continues to be a joy to paint.

Complementary color scheme - pthalo blue, ultramarine blue, green blue, Naples yellow, cadmium yellow light, permanent orange, cadmium red light, cadmium red; nearly square, vertical format; my first “hook composition, I think.
